The History of the Department

In 1876, a boy’s classical school was opened. Volodymyr Khavkin, a famous research bacteriologist, epidemiologist, and Louis Pasteur’s associate studied in it. The rebellious lieutenant Petro Schmidt studied there, too.

The issues of physical education were dealt with by the Department of Military and Physical Training that was headed by Senior Lecturer P.F. Kerentsev. During the period from 1952 to 1954, an Associate Professor D.K. Ushakov was appointed the head of the Department.

In 1953, Teachers’ Institute was transformed into State Teacher Training College. Until 1964, P.F. Kerentsev and I.A. Bondarenko, in turn, dealt with the issues of physical education and sport development in it.

From 1964 to 1966, the Department was headed by an Associate Professor V.K. Filippov. During the period from 1966 to 1968, the head of the Department of Physical Education was a Senior Lecturer H.M. Shylkin. In this post, he was replaced by a Senior Lecturer N.A. Shcherbyna who worked as the head until 1975.

In 1975 the Department of Physical Education was run by H.E. Tse-Kononenko, a PhD in Biology, an Associate Professor.

In 1991, after a twenty three-year break, the Department was headed by an Associate Professor H.M. Shylkin.

In 1990, on the basis of the faculty of primary school teacher training, a new specialty was opened: 7.010102 Primary Education. Specialization: Physical Culture. During the period of the specialization’s existence, there have been trained more than 400 specialists in primary education and physical culture for different regions.

In 2002, for the first time, an intake of students was made in specialty 6.010100 Pedagogy and Methodology of Secondary Education. Physical Culture at the Faculty of Primary Teacher Training. In 2005, the Faculty of Aesthetic and Physical Education was founded where the students of specialty 6.010100 Pedagogy and Methodology of Secondary Education. Physical Education were trained.

In 2010, the Faculty of Physical Education was founded. On the basis of the Department of Physical Education, a degree-granting Department of the Theory and Methods of Physical Education was founded according to the program subject area 6.010201 Physical Education and specialty 7.01020101 Physical Education.

In 2016, the Department of the Theory and Methods of Physical Education is reorganized into the Department of Physical Education and the Department of the Theory and Methods of Physical Education.
